Time to get serious…

I’m backkkkk

Hey guys,

I’m finally getting round to doing some blogging. The past few weeks have been horribly hectic and once I’d let it go a week or two without blogging it seemed like the easiest thing to put off you know? But I promise I am now back on it once again and I’m hopefully gonna do a bit of a blog redesign in the coming week, new year-new blog layout and all that.

I’m putting my serious face on now because I’ve decided it’s time for me to take this blogging thing seriously again. The past few months have not been my finest, I’ve been too distracted and now when I read back over the blogs I was writing they all seem kind of half-hearted and boring. Sorry about that.

I might not be able to do more than one a week but we’re looking for quality not quantity righttt? Right.

I had my one and only January exam on Tuesday which, for me, signalled the official start to ‘my new year’. Meaning that before that I was too focused on essays and revision to do anything good for me or anyone else.

I have a really good feeling about this year, I just know that it’s gonna be a year that holds a lot of cool and exciting things for me and the people I know. Maybe it’s just because I’m at an age where big life events are actually starting to happen, people are graduating and getting jobs and moving in together and going travelling…it feels like whenever I see someone I haven’t seen in a while they’ve got an exciting piece of news to tell me. This year is 2014 – Year of Positivity.

Since I’m yet to say it, HAPPY CHRISTMAS AND NEW YEAR to you, I hope it’s being exciting and positive for you too!

Right now I’m off to do a bit of reading on sexism towards First Ladies…don’t pretend you’re not jealous (I’m kidding, it’s actually really interesting).

See, even Eric's enjoying it

My top five reasons to be thankful today…

I’ve been in kind of a bad mood recently. Not the whole time but there’s a few things bugging me which I need to get resolved. However, that’s not what this post is about.

The lovely Daily Prompt has given me a reason to write about good stuff instead, so that’s what I’m going to do. You know how I like to be positive.

Here’s five good things which I’m thankful for.

I might point out that these were five random things I could think of right now which are relevant to things I’ve been thinking about/have happened to me recently. It goes without saying (but I’ll say it anyway so that people don’t think I’m ungrateful) that above all I’m thankful for my family and friends and my health and all that jazz.

Right, on with the actual list.

1) Some blogging awards

Recently some lovely people nominated me for some blogging awards. I’d never received one before and then lo and behold I got two in one week. That’s made me really happy and I am VERY thankful. The relevant award posts will follow soon I promise.

2) Oh lordy it’s good TV season again

If I can give you one piece of advice, it’s to watch this right now.

I’d love to be the kind of person this wouldn’t be important to but the drought of worthwhile TV over the past few months is one of the few things that makes me dislike summer. Now that there’s zero chance of pleasant weather here in England I don’t have to feel guilty for staying in bed all day on the weekends and watching all the great TV which is about to start up again. The highlights for me will be Homeland and The Mindy Project. I thank the TV gods that it’s about to rain down great viewing options once more.

3) Interesting comments

My last blog was a bit more serious than usual and I had a few comments on it which I appreciated. This isn’t just because getting comments makes me feel loved (and everyone should do it more) but also because I really like hearing what other people think about what I’ve written, especially when it’s on a more serious topic. Everyone has different and interesting opinions and part of the reason I’ve got so into blogging is because I like reading other people’s opinions on things. Getting comments that make me think more about what I’ve written, whether they agree with me or not, is exactly why blogging is so good for me and I’m very thankful that people take the time to do it.

4) Carbs

This is fairly self explanatory. I’ve decided that the only way I’m going to survive this winter is by eating a lot of pasta and bread and I’m very thankful that these tummy warming treats exist to help me get through the next few months.

5) My boyfriend doesn’t like football

That’s right…put it in the bin

Football is back on the telly or so I gather from Twitter. Some big football thing happened the other day…I don’t know, I couldn’t care less. What I would care about is if I had to pretend to care about football so that I could make my boyfriend feel loved if he wanted to talk to me about it. Every time a guy mentions football in my presence or I see a tweet or facebook update about it or, god forbid, I accidentally see a second of a football match on TV, I remember how thankful I am that my boyfriend doesn’t like it. Or any sport at all really, we’re very well suited in that respect.

Weekly Posts...

My top fives of this week…#3

Hey friends, hope you’re all good this fine Tuesday.

Time for my (almost) weekly post where I give you a nice round up of what I’ve been up to. Not only is this a great way to fill up space when I can’t think of anything to blog about, it also serves as a nice online diary for myself. In years to come I’ll be able to look back and get a nice warm feeling inside when I remember all the fun and interesting things I’ve been doing…or not.

So, here’s number 3. (Check out the links in the bottom if you’d like to read earlier editions).

1) I got addicted to Pinterest

Ok, I’m a little late to the party and it’s all old news to most but still I’m a new pinner. Much like this blog, I actually got the pinterest account last year sometime, but of course it took me a few false starts to get going. Now I’m pretty into it.

Also, I’d really like some more pinterest friends so if any of you are on pinterest you can find me in the link up top…see it? Click that and it’ll take you to my pinterest. Wait til you’ve finished reading this post though, you don’t want to miss out on the rest of my week now do you?

Oh and while you’re at it, see that link next to it that says twitter? Yeah go ahead and click on that one too. Ok, shameless begging for followers on various social networking sights…check.

2) I went to my first blog party

As parties go, this one was a blast. It meant that I could meet new bloggers and get to read and follow their blogs. It was hosted by Suzie81, some of you might know her, I gather she’s pretty big on the blogging scene. Anyways, she hosted this blog party which she’s apparently going to make a monthly thing now which is great news. Thanks very much Suzie!

3) I cooked some nice food

As much as I would love to be one of those bloggers that could take stunning photos of their creations, I’m just not. My speciality is more in rambling (as you can see). Maybe one day I’ll be able to do it but for now it just doesn’t seem to be happening. I do try but they always come out looking kind of grim. So, instead, I’ll link you to the recipes I made so that you can see other people’s nice pictures of them which sounds much better for everyone.

I’m sure lots of you have seen Rosie’s blog at thelondoner.me, I made her shrimp curry which was awesome and super easy, you can find it here. Last night I made this sesame chicken recipe which was also really good.

4) I tried to write a serious post and it flopped

If you’re interested you can see the post here, statistics show you won’t be interested but whatever…no I’m not bitter at all.

Juuuuust kidding. In general I’m quite silly and frivolous, in life and, even more so, on this blog. I’m ok with being like that, it’s who I am a lot of the time but sometimes I do like to get a bit serious and try and talk about something more important than usual. I like trying things out and I’m not going to stop doing that.

Whether it was the subject matter, the writing style/standard or just that people weren’t that bothered about reading what I had to say about it, all those things can be fixed so I’ll keep trying. I want to use this blog to improve my writing as much as I can, so sorry if there’s some duds in here, I’ll get there in the end.

5) I started watching Grey’s Anatomy to fill the void of House ending

And yes I know House ended a while ago but my parents and I are a bit behind and now we have four episodes left and I am HEARTBROKEN. But, on the plus side, I started watching Grey’s Anatomy on Sunday as a substitute. 5 minutes, that was all it took and I was hooked. I text my friend who started watching a few months ago and has been on about it since then, we agreed I should be able to get up to speed pretty quickly…

My Favourite Things...

My top five reasons I’m addicted to reading blogs…

Until recently I hadn’t used my WordPress account as a way of discovering other blogs. I would dutifully come online and post whatever top five I was working on that day and then head off back to an episode of Come Dine With Me or whatever other trash I was watching at the time.

Now I linger. When I have nothing to do, instead of turning on an episode of something, I’ll click onto Freshly Pressed and find someone new to learn about. I hover over my reader page waiting for someone I follow to post something new for me to consider. It’s my new favourite thing.

1) I’m so very nosy

I admit it, there is a part of me that simply loves reading blogs because I like hearing about other people’s lives. I always have been very interested in other people. I like to understand how other people live and what interests them. That’s not to say I want to push into people’s lives and know more than what they’re willing to share but when I click onto someone’s blog and they tell their stories about what they’ve been doing that day I feel like I’m getting to know them a little bit.

2) What I don’t know

I can tell you close to anything you want to know about what it’s like to be a student in the UK right now, if I haven’t experienced something, someone I know probably will have. What I like is that I can get to know what life is like for someone else entirely. Weirdly, I love reading parenting blogs, make of that what you will! I love reading about what life is like for people in other countries, that travelling curiosity coming out. People write blogs for so many different reasons…I love to find out what the are.

3) They’re inspiring

I can look to people who are writing their blogs to help them deal with personal trauma, depression, loss and find hundreds of people that are inspiring in their own way. Even if they feel as though they’re struggling to make it from one day to the next, as they document this struggle they are offering the rest of the world some hope as they find ways to deal with the lives they have been given. Not only that, but people who are writing simply to entertain, for something to do, because they love writing…why ever they might be doing it, their blogs can offer little pieces of inspiration, especially for blogging beginners like me.

4) Learn stuff

People are writing blogs about all sorts of things. For me, cooking blogs are my favourite for this. I’ve always loved cooking and baking and cooking blogs are my way to learn more about food and more about the way people cook, especially on a budget as I will be once I’m back in a student house.

5) Have a chuckle

Of course there are the humour blogs which set out to make people laugh and I follow plenty of them. But then there’s all the others. I guess what I like about reading people’s blogs is that along with the sad and the touching and the thought provoking, there’s a lot of people just writing about their lives and, as it turns out, life is pretty funny. As well as feeling for people when sad things happen to them and supporting them with a comment when they need it, I just like laughing with people who want to share their funny stories with the world.

I’m sure if you’re reading this you enjoy reading blogs as well, if you know any great one’s please recommend them to me and help feed my addiction!

My Favourite Things..., My Fresh Start...

My top five things my blog can tell you about me…

This is my 19th post on this blog. I feel like a reflective post should be on a nice even number; here’s a fact about me for free…I hate odd numbers, don’t know what it is about them they just don’t look good to me. My lucky number is 8, in case you’re interested.

Anyways, this Daily Prompt fell on the day of my 19th post so who am I to argue? I shall persevere through my hatred of odd numbers and present you with a nice reflective 19th post.

1) I’m not too good at sticking things out

At least the old me wasn’t. I started this blog last September and my final post while I was in Albany was in December. If you were basing a judgement on that track record you could definitely argue that the meagre effort I put in last year was a reflection of a person who struggles with seeing things through. But like I said, that was the old me, you can read all about the new me here. So maybe the first thing you can really learn about me is that I’m trying to improve myself.

2) I like positivity

The prompt suggested considering your blog title. I guess in my mind this blog could have been called ‘Five things about’ or ‘Five reasons why’ or something like that (ok those names kind of suck but you get the picture). The reason it’s called ‘My top fives’ is because, on the whole, I tend to prefer thinking about five reasons I like something rather than five reasons why I don’t like something. Negativity kind of bores me a lot of the time; it’s not so much that it upsets me but that being around people who are perpetually negative kind of gets a bit old after a while, what’s the point in assuming the worst?

3) I LIKE YELLOW

Well just in case you thought my choice of background was arbitrary, it’s not. Yellow is my favourite colour and it used to be somewhat of an obsession of mine. My family used to buy me everything yellow up until a few years ago, maybe I’m growing up now that I’m open to other colour choices, I don’t know. Anyways, yellow things make me smile.

4) I spend a lot of time contemplating both the past and the future

I guess this is just a human trait really. If I’m not missing the good old days and writing lame posts about childhood bands, I’m thinking about the things I’ll be able to buy with the money I assume I’m going to make one day and writing posts about what I’m going to be when I finally grow up.

5) I love a good ellipsis…

Take a brief stroll through my blog and you’ll find an excessive amount of full stops scattered all over the place. I don’t know why I do this but it’s something people often comment on. I do it on facebook, twitter and now on here too. Wikipedia tells me that an ellipsis can be used to indicate an unfinished thought or a trailing off into silence. I feel like that’s pretty accurate, most of the time I stop talking it’s because I’ve been distracted by something else or realised I’m sounding like a bit of an idiot so should probably trail off quietly!
